If you’re shopping for someone who adores dogs (and perhaps you are a dog-obsessed lady like me) then you’re in the right place. This year I’d love to share two things: (1) how you can pick a gift that celebrates the love of dogs without adding to the puppy-acquisition impulse, and (2) how if a puppy is on the horizon, I’m here to help with puppy classes, behaviour advice and a ‘do no harm’ approach to training.

Why not a puppy?

We all feel that pull – the puppy eyes, the wagging tail, the promise of fun and companionship. And indeed, a well-matched, well-prepared adoption (or responsible purchase) can be wonderful. But as a behaviourist I’ve seen so many families under-estimate just how big a commitment a puppy is: time, training, socialisation, mental stimulation, continued support. So this Christmas, if you’re considering a present for a dog-lover, you might choose to celebrate the bond they already have (with a beloved dog) or help them celebrate their love of dogs without diving straight into “let’s get one now”.
